5.3 square miles of stately trees line the streets of Wilmette, a six time winner of the “Tree City USA” award. The east side of town, by Lake Michigan, captures the history of the community. Cobblestone streets and antique lampposts give the feeling of a by-gone era. Wilmette is a charming community with a great deal to offer both residents and visitors alike.

Transportation
Chicago & Northwestern trains provide express transportation to the city in 20 minutes. The CTA elevated trains reach the Loop in 40 minutes. The Edens Expressway (I-94) can be accessed on the west side of Wilmette. PACE bus service is provided throughout the North Shore suburbs along Green Bay Road.

Schools
Districts 37 and 39 serve elementary-age students. All three districts provide computer education, art and music instruction, and gifted programs. New Trier High School, one of the most highly regarded schools in the country, boasts a 100% graduation rate. St. Francis Xavier elementary school, as well as Loyola Academy, and Regina Dominican for girls, offer outstanding alternatives to the already acclaimed public schools.

Shopping
Shopping centers include the downtown district, which features a variety of specialty shops. Edens Plaza Shopping Center provides local patrons with many shops, including Carson Pirie Scott. Plaza del Lago, one of the oldest shopping centers in the United States, houses over 35 stores featuring a variety of lovely shops and a large grocery chain. Old Orchard Center is one mile away.

Recreation
The Wilmette Park District operates 19 parks with over 320 acres of land. Gillson Park features a 1,200-foot natural sand beach attracting water sports enthusiasts as well as those who enjoy swimming and sunning. Wilmette features one of the premier sailing beaches in the Midwest. Wilmette is home to the Michigan Shores Club, Westmoreland Country Club, and the Sheridan Shore Yacht Club in addition to the U.S. Coast Guard Lifeboat Station. There are more than a dozen golf and country clubs in the area.

Hospitals
Excellent medical facilities serve the surrounding areas. Evanston Hospital, a 550-bed teaching facility is associated with Northwestern University Medical School. Highland Park Hospital, a 312-bed facility, is a training and resource center for paramedics. Lake Forest Hospital, a 224-bed facility, operates a pain treatment center and senior care.

Places of Worship
Wilmette houses 16 places of worship incorporating 12 different denominations. Among these is the United States headquarters for the Baha’i faith at the landmark Baha’i Temple.
